The barrel marmalade was developed in 1935 as part of a growing group of Shamrock pieces made specially or adapted for the United States and Canadian markets.  Its design is based on the old wooden churns used to make butter, once a familiar sight in most Irish country homes but now mostly seen in folk museums.
