Belleek Shamrock THREE Handled CupOn Sale
150th Anniversary Archive Collection Limited Edition for 2007 # / 1,000 (suggested retail $175.00) Currently two in stock This rare piece was designed sometime within the second period between 1891 and 1926. Possibly made as a test piece, it has never featured in any of Belleekās catalogues. The ancient Greeks made three-handled vessels, called Hydria, designed to carry water from wells. Presumably three handles made it easier for two people to carry these containers. Three-handled cups, based on Greek designs, came into vogue in the early part of the 20th Century as fashionable decorative pieces. It is likely that Belleek followed this trend, adding its distinctive Irish flavor. |
